Introduced for the 1954 model year, the Kaiser Darrin is a fiberglass-bodied American roadster distinguished by its patented sliding pocket doors and powered by a Willys-sourced 161ci inline-six, with just 435 examples produced. Developed under the direction of Howard “Dutch” Darrin for Kaiser Motors, it was conceived to compete with European sports cars and early domestic rivals such as the Chevrolet Corvette (C1), and stands among the earliest American production cars to feature a fiberglass body. This example was reportedly rescued by the seller approximately one year ago from long-term barn storage in Tennessee, where it had remained for several decades, and has since been recommissioned for driving. An authentic barn-find suitable for enjoyment as-is or as the basis for a complete restoration, this rare Kaiser Darrin is now being offered for auction in Oklahoma. The Kaiser Darrin features a lightweight fiberglass body mounted over a steel frame, characterized by low, flowing pontoon-style fenders, a long hood, and a compact rear deck. Its most distinctive element is the pair of patented sliding pocket doors, which retract forward into the front fenders on tracks rather than opening outward. Exterior details include a narrow chrome grille, a wraparound “Darrin dip” cutline along the doors and rear fenders, a white convertible soft top, a driver’s side mirror, windshield wings, and chrome bumpers. This car is said to have been refinished in white during the 1970s. It rides on 15” steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and whitewall tires. The seller notes the paint retains a shine while exhibiting age-appropriate patina. Detailed images are provided in the gallery. The cabin is appointed with red leather upholstery, matching carpets, and a body-colored instrument surround. Equipment includes bucket seats, a white two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring, a floor-mounted shifter, a heater, and a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror. The interior remains unrestored and shows visible signs of age and wear consistent with long-term storage. Power comes from a Willys-sourced 161ci L-head inline-six engine featuring a single downdraft carburetor, factory-rated at approximately 90 HP and 130 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 3-speed manual transmission. The chassis utilizes a conventional body-on-frame layout with independent front suspension and a live rear axle supported by leaf springs, while braking is handled by four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Since the seller’s acquisition, service is said to include a new fuel tank, fuel pump, master and wheel cylinders, brake hoses and shoes, a radiator, ignition wires, and a full fluid service. The seller adds that the car runs and drives well with no outstanding mechanical issues reported. This sale will include a spare tire and a clean title. The seller would like you to know: “Ok, guys. I have enjoyed this car over the last year or so, and it is rare to find a nice driver that is patinaed, as these cars are pretty well always fully restored, which makes this car a very fun oddity of its own. The Kaiser Darrin is a classy and odd car that gets attention wherever you take it, and the cool thing is the people who say they know about the cars always say they have never seen one in person. The Darrin is also a featured car on the Prime series Fallout, as it is the car the main character drives, so that is also bringing new attention to the car, as more people now recognize the unique styling and super cool sliding pocket doors. I have a very fair reserve on this car, and the car has a lot of additional upside if someone wanted to restore it, but I personally like the car as it is due to being able to be enjoyed with no worry.”
