1964 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series I by Pininfarina

Unveiled at the 1964 Brussels Auto Show, the Pininfarina-penned 330 GT 2+2 Series I was a replacement for the 330 America, which was itself a derivation of the 250 GT/E. Featuring disc brakes all round, independent front suspension, and telescopic shock absorbers; the 330 GT 2+2 was powered by a 4.0-litre type-209 "Colombo" V-12 engine fed by a bank of three Weber carburettors to produce 296 horsepower. Series I examples—such as the car offered here—had a four-speed, all-synchro manual gearbox with an electronically operated overdrive fifth gear. The Tom Tjaarda-styled Series I was noted for its distinct four-headlight layout; an apparent change in design philosophy that reflected the tastes of the Prancing Horse’s largest export market: the United States. Total production of the 330 GT 2+2, across all series, stretched to circa 1,090 cars. Naturally, several of those would find more famous owners. Chiefly, none other than company founder Enzo Ferrari opted for a 330 GT 2+2 as his daily driver, while John Lennon purchased a Series I shortly after passing his driving test. This car, chassis number 5439 GT, was manufactured in January 1964 in Blu Sera over Pelle Rossa. It was delivered new in its home country of Italy via the SIVAM dealership in Bologna and first registered for road use on 1 September 1965. Later destined for the USA, the 330 GT was owned by James G MacLean in Costa Mesa, California from 1977. MacLean, a Dr of Physics from Stanford University, was a keen national-level racing driver aboard his McLaren Can-Am car and a two-time president of the Ferrari Owners Club. From 1989, chassis 5439 GT belonged to fellow Golden State resident James H Parkinson of Corona Del Mar. The car then made its way back to Europe, via France, under the ownership of Roger Pilette prior to being purchased by an owner based in Switzerland. Presented today in the elegant colour combination of silver over red, chassis 5439 GT is powered by its matching-numbers engine and offers an excellent opportunity to sample 1960s Ferrari grand touring glamour.
