1977 Fiat 131 Abarth Rally Stradale

From the World Rally Championship’s inception in 1973, Fiat consistently contended for the top prize, albeit initially falling short of title glory. By 1975 the company began developing its second-generation WRC entry, a 131-based model powered by an Abarth-prepared engine. To satisfy homologation rules, Fiat built 400 road-going examples of the 131 Abarth rally car. These Stradale versions are coveted by enthusiasts for their elevated build specifications and corresponding athletic performance. The 131 Abarth Rally Stradale was equipped with performance upgrades including independent front and rear suspension, all-wheel disc brakes, weight-reducing coachwork revisions by Bertone, and the unique dual-overhead-camshaft 16-valve Abarth-prepared engine. All told, these modifications resulted in a rewarding power-to-weight ratio that customers delighted in indulging at competition events. Meanwhile, the Fiat team cars eventually triumphed in competition by taking the WRC Constructors’ Championship in 1978, 1979, and 1980, and accompanying Drivers’ crown in 1978 and 1980. The 131 Abarth was the backbone of this dominant streak, firmly establishing Fiat’s credentials in rallying lore. This handsomely finished 131 Abarth is a particularly well-presented example of Fiat’s rare homologation special. While the Fiat’s early history currently remains unknown, by the mid-2010s the car had passed into the collection of an officer of the Automobile Club of Luxemburg. This enthusiast regularly serviced the 131 Abarth at Autopolis SA from 2016 until March 2022, as demonstrated by invoices on file. In July 2022 the Fiat was sold to the consigning owner, a respected collector based in Switzerland. The vendor quickly commissioned a high-level sympathetic restoration by Blue Palm Service of Münsingen, Switzerland, including an overhaul of the cylinder head with new camshafts and adjustment of the valves. The carburettor was rebuilt and new spark plugs were installed. Further service included the installation of new belts, engine mounts, muffler, and battery, while the ignition was rebuilt and the electrical system sorted as needed. Finally, the seats were reupholstered and the Rosso Arancio paint touched up with due care. Ideal for participation in classic rallying events, or presentation at Fiat gatherings and local concours d’elegance, this electrifying 131 Abarth would make a smashing addition to any sporting collection. The rare homologation special showcases a brilliant collaboration with Abarth and Bertone, capably representing the WRC-winning model that brought Turin three Manufacturers’ and two Drivers’ Championships.
