1973 Citroen GS Birotor Project

This 1973 Citroën GS Birotor is one of 847 produced over a three-year span, and it was acquired by Peter Mullin out of the Netherlands in 2016 for display at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California. The car is powered by a 1,990cc rotary engine linked to a three-speed semi-automatic transaxle and features a hydropneumatic suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, 14” steel wheels, tan cloth upholstery, and Jaeger gauges. Chassis 00GG0009 was recently purchased as a running and driving project by the selling dealer, who reports that coolant is present in the engine oil. Currently showing 1,700 kilometers (~1,100 miles), this GS Birotor project is offered in Texas at no reserve with an Arizona title. The GS was styled by Citroën’s chief designer Robert Opron and introduced in 1970 as a four-door saloon with a fastback profile and a Kamm tail. The GS Birotor was produced from 1973 to 1975, and distinguishing features include flared wheel arches and bright rocker-panel trim. A total of 847 were produced, many of which were bought back by Citroën and destroyed. This car is finished in metallic beige with a brown roof, and white pinstriping runs along the sides. Other details include a honeycomb grille, a left-side mirror, and wraparound bumpers. The selling dealer notes areas of corrosion on the doors that are shown up close in the image gallery below along with dull paint on the right-front door, dings, and other imperfections around the car. Birotor models ride on five-lug 14” steel wheels with outboard-mounted disc brakes at all four corners. The self-leveling, height-adjustable hydropneumatic suspension and rack-and-pinion steering of other GS variants were retained. This car’s silver-finished wheels wear polished hubcaps and are wrapped in older 165-series Michelin XAS tires. The spare is missing. The individual front seats and rear bench are trimmed in tan cloth, and brushed metal trim accents the dashboard and center console. A cabin heater and crank windows were standard equipment. The single-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 200-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 1,700 kilometers (~1,100 miles). The 1,990cc two-rotor Type 624 rotary was produced by Comotor, a Luxembourg-based joint venture between Citroën and NSU. The engine is mounted transversely and equipped with a two-barrel Solex carburetor as well as a Bosch ignition system. Output was rated by the factory at 107 bhp. The selling dealer notes that coolant is present in the oil, and the engine will need repairs. Power is sent to the front wheels through a three-speed semi-automatic transaxle. Rust is visible on underbody components, which can be viewed in the gallery. The Arizona title lists an odometer reading of zero with an “Exempt” notation.
